Wastewater treatment facilities must be able to safely, reliably handle wastewater at each stage of the treatment process, which requires a variety of piping systems adapted for each job.

Influent, primary treatment, digesters, and sludge handling streams need to be able to manage solids and slurries. Chemical feed systems must be able to withstand constant exposure to caustic, chlorine-heavy materials, and effluent systems must be sanitized and graded to handle process or discharge standards.

Wastewater Treatment Piping Considerations

Wastewater treatment facilities use both biohazardous materials and extremely corrosive chemicals, including hydrogen sulphide, chlorides, acids, and caustic materials. Pipes and tubing must be able to withstand pitting, corrosion, including microbiologically influenced corrosion, and sulfuric acids. Aeration systems used to help break down organic pollutants, require specially manufactured piping that can handle pressurization.

Piping for wastewater treatment also carries sand, biosolids, and slurries, which impacts the sizing, elbow selection, fitting types, and flow velocity requirements of piping systems as well as their abrasion resistance.

Wastewater Treatment Pipe Materials

Wastewater treatment systems require different materials depending on the process stream, operating environment, and chemical exposure they’re expected to handle, so we fabricate these on a case-by-case basis, according to your needs and specifications, but there are certain materials that we use more frequently than others.

316L stainless steel provides excellent corrosion resistance for process piping, chemical feed systems, and applications exposed to chlorides, making it a common choice for demanding wastewater environments. 304L stainless steel offers reliable corrosion resistance for many general process and utility applications while providing an economical solution where exposure conditions are less aggressive.

For more corrosive process streams, 317L stainless steel provides increased resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Where elevated chloride concentrations or particularly aggressive wastewater environments demand exceptional corrosion resistance, AL-6XN® offers outstanding performance and long-term durability.

We also manufacture piping in Duplex alloys, Hastelloy®, and Inconel® 625 for specialized services involving severe chemical corrosion, aggressive chlorides, or extreme operating conditions.

We manufacture pipe ranging from ¾ inch NPS up to 96 inches in diameter, with fittings and accessories to match. We frequently fabricate larger diameter piping for influent, effluent, sludge, and process water systems, making fabricated large-diameter pipe and fittings a significant part of our catalogue for wastewater treatment facilities, especially our A409 pipe. We manufacture light-wall Schedule 10S and heavy-wall spools (14 gauge to 0.500″ wall thickness), with custom sizing available to meet project specifications.
