PULP & PAPER PIPING

Pulp and paper production places unique demands on process piping.

From transporting abrasive pulp slurries and process water to handling corrosive bleaching chemicals, steam, and chemical recovery systems, piping must withstand continuous operation while delivering reliable performance and long service life.

At Douglas Barwick, we work closely with our clients in the lumber industry and their pulp and paper mills to deliver piping systems tailored to their needs, and we have a long track record of doing so successfully.

Pulp and Paper Piping Considerations

The pulp and paper industry has several challenges to contend with when processing timber, including extremely aggressive chemicals, abrasive materials, high pressure and temperature substances, fibre and solids handling, and chemical recovery systems, which combine corrosivity, temperature, and abrasion for very severe conditions.

At Douglas Barwick, our piping systems are fabricated to meet demanding industrial environments while accounting for considerations such as:

  • Corrosion resistance against aggressive process chemicals,
  • Abrasion from wood fibre, pulp slurry, and suspended solids,
  • Reliable handling of chemical recovery systems,
  • Large-diameter, low-pressure process piping,
  • Smooth-flow fittings that minimize fibre buildup and plugging,
  • Pickled and passivated stainless-steel systems, and
  • Compliance with applicable pulp and paper industry standards.

Pulp and Paper Pipe Materials

Pulp and paper facilities require a variety of materials depending on the process, operating temperatures, and chemical exposure.

304L stainless steel is often used throughout mills for process water, white water systems, and general process piping where good corrosion resistance and durability are required. 316L stainless steel offers enhanced corrosion resistance and is well suited for chemical processing, wash systems, and applications exposed to more aggressive operating environments.

For chloride-rich or more corrosive process streams, 317L stainless steel provides increased resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Where exceptionally aggressive process chemicals or bleach plant environments require a higher level of corrosion protection, AL-6XN® offers outstanding resistance to chlorides and other corrosive media.

We also manufacture piping in Hastelloy®, Inconel® 625, and Duplex alloys for specialized applications involving severe chemical corrosion, aggressive chlorides, or elevated operating temperatures.

Frequently Fabricated Sizes

At Douglas Barwick, we manufacture pipe ranging from ¾ inch NPS to 96 inches in diameter, with fittings and accessories to match. Typical pulp and paper applications include chemical feed systems, process water lines, pulp slurry systems, white water systems, steam headers, and chemical recovery systems. We can create pipe with wall thicknesses that range from 14 gauge (0.083″) to 0.500″.
