ETHANOL & BIOFUELS

ETHANOL & BIOFUELS PIPING

From fermentation and distillation to storage, blending, and loading.

Ethanol and biofuel production facilities rely on durable, corrosion-resistant piping systems to transport feedstocks, process fluids, alcohol products, and utility services throughout every stage of production. From fermentation and distillation to storage, blending, and loading, piping must withstand thermal cycling, organic acids, and continuous process demands while maintaining product quality and long-term reliability. At Douglas Barwick, we have decades of experience fabricating piping that holds up to continuous operation year over year.

Ethanol and Biofuels Piping Considerations

We manufacture stainless steel pipe, fittings, flanges, fabricated pipe spools, manifolds, and custom assemblies for ethanol plants, renewable fuel facilities, and biofuel processing operations. Every system is fabricated to meet project specifications while addressing your system’s needs, including:

  • Compatibility with ethanol and other alcohol-based products,
  • Resistance to corrosion from organic acids,
  • Hygienic, easy-to-clean process piping,
  • Thermal cycling during production and cleaning,
  • Reliable transfer between process equipment and tank farms, and
  • Long-term durability.

Ethanol and Biofuel Pipe Materials

The right materials play an important role in maximizing service life and maintaining process reliability in ethanol and biofuel production.

304L stainless steel is commonly used throughout ethanol plants for process piping, transfer lines, storage systems, and utility services. It provides excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and weldability for most biofuel applications.

For systems exposed to higher concentrations of organic acids, aggressive cleaning chemicals, or more corrosive process streams, 316L stainless steel offers enhanced corrosion resistance and long-term performance.

Where process conditions are more demanding, 317L stainless steel provides increased resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and aggressive chemical environments, making it well suited for more corrosive process streams. For specialized applications involving particularly aggressive chemicals or high chloride concentrations, AL-6XN® offers exceptional corrosion resistance and long-term reliability.

Common Ethanol and Biofuel Piping Products

At Douglas Barwick, we manufacture a wide range of piping products for ethanol and biofuel facilities, including:

  • ASTM A778 process piping
  • ASTM A312 stainless steel transfer lines
  • ASTM A403 stainless steel fittings
  • Sanitary weld fittings
  • Stainless steel flanges
  • Large, fabricated manifolds

Our custom fabricated pipe spools and assemblies are sent to you already assembled for easy installation on-site. This is particularly useful for remote operations without access to the tools and expertise needed to assemble a welded piping system on-site.

Frequently Fabricated Sizes

We manufacture pipe ranging from ¾ inch NPS up to 96 inches in diameter, with fittings and accessories to match. Ethanol and biofuel facilities commonly utilize smaller process piping for transfer systems together with larger diameter piping for storage terminals, tank farms, utility services, and production infrastructure. We manufacture light-wall Schedule 10S and heavy-wall spools (14 gauge to 0.500″ wall thickness), with Schedule 10S and Schedule 40S frequently specified for stainless steel process lines.
