POTABLE WATER

POTABLE WATER PIPING

Potable water systems require piping that delivers safe, reliable performance for decades while protecting drinking water quality.

From municipal water treatment plants and pumping stations to transmission mains and distribution infrastructure, piping must resist corrosion, maintain sanitary conditions, and comply with strict regulatory standards for materials in contact with drinking water.

At Douglas Barwick, we’ve worked with several communities and municipalities across Canada and the USA to create safe, sanitary piping systems for potable water.

Potable Water Piping Considerations

We manufacture welded pipe, fittings, flanges, fabricated pipe spools, and custom assemblies for potable water treatment and distribution systems. Our piping is fabricated to meet project specifications while addressing critical considerations such as:

  • Maintaining drinking water quality
  • Minimizing contamination risk
  • Sanitary, easy-to-clean construction
  • Long-term corrosion resistance
  • Reliable performance in municipal infrastructure
  • Compliance with NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, AWWA, CSA, and project specifications

Potable Water Piping Materials

Stainless steel offers excellent durability, corrosion resistance, and a long service life for potable water applications while, most importantly keeping the water safe to drink throughout the treatment and distribution processes.

304L stainless steel is commonly used for municipal drinking water systems, treatment facilities, pump stations, reservoirs, and transmission piping. It provides excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and ease of maintenance for most potable water applications.

For systems exposed to higher chloride concentrations or more aggressive water chemistry, 316L stainless steel provides enhanced corrosion resistance, making it well suited for coastal municipalities, chlorinated water systems, and other demanding environments.

Common Potable Water Piping System Products

We manufacture a wide range of piping products for potable water systems, including:

  • ASTM A778 welded stainless steel pipe
  • ASTM A409 large-diameter stainless steel pipe
  • ASTM A774 stainless steel fittings
  • AWWA flanges
  • Mitered elbows
  • Water treatment pipe spools
  • Custom fabricated piping assemblies

Our custom spool assemblies – featuring internal weld back purging and chemical passivation – are fabricated in our shop for faster, cost-efficient installation on-site. This makes them a popular choice for communities that want to quickly re-establish access to safe drinking water with minimal downtime for installation..

Frequently Fabricated Sizes

At Douglas Barwick, we manufacture pipe ranging from ¾ inch NPS up to 96 inches in diameter, with fittings and accessories to match. Potable water systems commonly utilize larger diameter piping for transmission mains, treatment facilities, reservoirs, pump stations, and distribution infrastructure. We manufacture light-wall Schedule 10S and heavy-wall spools (14 gauge to 0.500″ wall thickness), with custom sizing available to meet high-pressure project specifications.
