Quality Assurance Standards and Regulations

At Douglas Barwick, we manufacture pipes, fittings, and accessories for several markets across North America, and they all have their own standards and regulations to adhere to. We build our piping systems to accommodate those needs.

ISO 9001 is the globally recognized standard for Quality Management Systems. It focuses on seven quality principles:

Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry

The Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) has a set of technical standards for stainless-steel pipe specifications for stainless-steel pipe used in pulp mills, TAPPI TIP 0402-24, as well as a set of specification for stainless-steel digesters and the systems associated with them, TAPPI TIP 0402-27. We’ve been working closely with clients in the pulp and paper industries for decades and are extremely experienced in manufacturing pipe to comply with these standards.

National Sanitation Foundation

Our clients in the potable water and water treatment industries are always very conscious of ensuring the materials and components that come into contact with potable water meet regulations. The National Sanitation Foundation’s (NSF) standards for stainless-steel pipe and tubing include NSF/ANSI 61, which regulates drinking water system components, and NSF 372, which verifies a low lead content in drinking water components including the fittings and valves we produce.

We hold the NSF/ANSI 61certification for stainless-steel pipe and fittings used in drinking water systems.

ASTM and ASME Specifications

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards focus on what the material we’re working with is and how to test it, including its chemical composition, physical properties, and approved testing methods.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards focus on how to safely use that material in design and construction. They establish strict engineering codes and standards for mechanical systems, such as boilers, pressure vessels, and piping systems.

We comply carefully with all ASTM and ASME specifications, so you know you can trust our systems.

Forestry Products Association of Canada

The Forestry Products Association of Canada (FPAC) is one of the regulatory bodies for forestry regarding environmental protection. Working so closely with the pulp and paper industry, many of our clients are concerned with issues surrounding effluent discharge, air emissions, chemical containment, and leak prevention. FPAC encourages the use of stainless-steel systems in corrosive services, and ours are approved by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry.

American Water Works Association

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) sets the primary North American standards for water distribution piping. These are ANSI-accredited guidelines that ensure the safe manufacture, installation, and testing of water mains, including both steel and ductile iron. For our work with clients in the potable water and water treatment industries, we frequently fabricate and weld pipe and fittings in line with ANSI/AWWA C220, C226, C228, C231, C200, C207, and C206 standards.

Technical Standards Safety Authority

The Technical Standards Safety Authority (TSSA) regulates the manufacture, installation, repair, inspection, and use of pressure-retaining equipment in Ontario. They provide regulation and oversight over pressure vessel and piping registration, inspection, and welding, and they actively encourage:

  • code-compliant engineering
  • traceable materials
  • formal quality assurance systems
  • certified welding
  • documented testing
  • registered designs
  • audited manufacturing procedures

These regulations frequently come into play when we develop specialized pipe and fittings for pressurized systems, such as those we produce for the oil and gas industry.


Additional Testing and Quality Controls

We want you to be confident in the quality and reliability of our piping systems, which is why we have several standard and specialized tests and quality control measures in place. For example, we maintain full material traceability for all products in our shop to the original mill certificates, perform tension, reverse, and forward bend tests on each lot of pipes, and carefully heat-treat all pipes and fittings that we produce.

Upon request, we can also perform radiographic testing, hydrostatic testing, and pickling and passivation on stainless-steel products to ASTM A380 code to prevent surface discoloration from free iron oxidization.
